Lamu

Lamu is Kenya’s oldest living town with a long history. By 1500s it was a thriving port exporting timber, ivory, spices and slaves. Over the years, Lamu has retained its charm and character over the years having been built up over centuries.
Still undisturbed by turmoil of modern times, there are no cars so donkeys are the main means of transport. It lies over 100km north of Mombasa.

Activities include a guided tour to the fort which functions as a local science centre, Lamu Fort which was built by the help of Omani slave trader and Sultan Seyid Said around 1810. This stone fort looked over the port to protect the Lamu people from hostile alliances. It later became the headquarters for colonial British administration and a prison after that.
The dhow trip, the sparkling beaches, the food and rich culture are also experiences on their own.

Lamu altogether is a no news no shoes beach ……….
